SUMMER WEDDING DAY WEATHER PLANS…
As you’re planning your special day, I’m sure you’ve envisioned every detail being absolutely perfect! But let's face it.... Melbourne weather can be fkn unpredictable—one minute it’s sunny and warm, and the next, there's a sudden downpour! 🤦🏻♀️
While we all hope for beautiful weather on your wedding day, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for anything! So here's my advice;
Have a Plan B (C & D even!): The best way to ensure you’re happy with your wedding back-up plan is to have one in the first place. And not one you hurriedly put together a few days before your wedding because the weather turned bad – this can lead to disappointment and frustration. Planning ahead means you have time to consider how to have the wedding of your dreams, whatever the weather. So my advice would be to find out what your wedding venue's indoor option is and looks like! And if you are not having it at a venue then creating an indoor space at your location i.e. hire a marquee etc.
Dress Code: Skip the full suits for the guys—it’s just impractical. They’ll be sweating, which can make everyone feel uncomfortable and irritable. Instead, opt for a nice shirt and pants (or even stylish shorts for some weddings), paired with suspenders and/or a bow tie. This not only looks great but also fits the summer vibe perfectly.
Consider Moving Indoors: Be ready to let go of your outdoor ceremony dreams if it means keeping everyone comfortable. Sweating off meticulously applied makeup and guys with big sweat patches aren’t exactly ideal, especially for photos. Plus, overheated equipment like PA systems and iPads can fail in high heat, and there have even been reports of couples/vendors/guests fainting. Sometimes, moving indoors is the smarter choice—your guests and vendors will thank you.
Hydration: Keep plenty of water on hand—sparkling, still, and make sure it’s cold. Avoid single-use plastic bottles to minimise waste. Instead, set up large dispensers or jugs with taps, and keep them filled with ice and fruit slices. Guests will appreciate the refreshing drinks.
Ice, Ice, Baby: Serve cold beers, white wine, and signature drinks like frozen margaritas or gin and tonics loaded with ice and cucumber. These personal touches not only refresh but also create lasting memories. Trust me, people will rave about how you rolled out icy margaritas on that scorching hot day.
Provide Shade: This sounds obvious, but it’s often overlooked. Make sure there’s ample shade with marquees, market umbrellas, or even individual umbrellas for guests. And don’t forget sunscreen—offer it in baskets so guests can help themselves. If you’re planning a relaxed, fun wedding, consider handing out visors with your wedding details. Not only do they protect from the sun, but they also make for great photos and keepsakes.
Cool Treats: Ditch the cake and go for something more weather-appropriate like fancy ice blocks or ice cream. On a 39-degree day, no one’s reaching for cake—they want something light, like fruit, and ice-cold treats. Look into gelato carts or vans or ice cream trucks or find similar vendors in other areas.
Alcoholic Icy Poles: For something unique, try alcoholic icy poles like champagne, frosé, or martini-flavoured options. Alternatively, go for nostalgic favourites like Frosty Fruits or Zooper Doopers. These are the little details that guests will remember fondly.
The GOAT... Deodorant: I always recommend a strong deodorant for weddings, like Mitchum deo. It’s industrial strength and will keep everyone feeling fresh throughout the day!
Misting Fans: Misting fans, or bottles are easy to rent or buy and can be a lifesaver on a hot day. You can get simple hanging misting systems from places like Bunnings that connect to a garden hose. Later in the day, after your photos are done, why not get a little wet and have some fun? You’ll not only cool off but also get some amazing, candid shots. Alternatively, provide slimline metal misting bottles, fill them with cold water, and let guests use them at their leisure.
Now go on.... let's have a (comfortable) summer wedding!
